Yes, there is something primitive and basic about wood that is very reassuring - which partly explains my affection for these great planes, I guess. That, and the fact that they so clearly come from another era, and function as a link to a long ago past that is now largely forgotten - just as we will be in due course.

If anyone ever gets out to Texas Qld - the bar at the Texas Motel ( not the Hotel over the road) but the Texas Motel is made out of a single piece of Ironbark left with the natural edge that my ex and I milled on our Lucas Mill at Springdale - the log was cut from our 2nd property Dilladerri which was out the back of Inglewood. It was a beautiful piece of timber with a lovely grain just like the bench that Henry has done.

I agree with the comment re working with wood is good for the soul.. It certainly is and when one sees the beautiful grains emerge from a piece of rough hewn timber it is pure magic.

Old tools Stephen are quite highly rated and I reckon there would be people who would be very interested in them, but would you want to lose a piece of your family's history. Why not make up a wall display mount and write a poem about them as a special family momento. Original and irreplaceable. Lucky you
