Ol' Shep.

Due to recalling many memories about Laurie Wilson, one - is his Aussie singing and yodelling ability,
along with his love of and for those old favourites.
One being - Bridle hanging on the wall.

Another - Ol' Shep.

When I was a lad and ol' Shep was a pup
over hills and valleys we'd stray.
Just a boy and his dog, we were both full of fun
and we grew up together that way.

I remember the time at the ol' swimming hole
when I would have drowned beyond doubt.
but ol' Shep was right there,
to the rescue he came
he jumped in and helped pull me out.

As the years rolled along and Sheppy grew old
his eyesight was fast growing dim
until one day the doctor looked at me and said
I can do no more for him Jim.

With a hand that was trembling I picked up my gun
then aimed it at Shep's faithful head.
I just couldn't do it. I wanted to run.
I wished they would shoot me instead.

Now Sheppy has gone where the good doggies go
and no more with old Shep will I roam
But if dogs have a heaven, there's one thing I know
ol' Shep has a wonderful home.

"Old Shep" is a song by Red Foley and Arthur Willis about a dog Foley owned as a child (in reality, the dog, poisoned by a neighbor, was a German shepherd named Hoover). Foley and Willis wrote the song in 1933. Foley first recorded the song in 1935, again in 1941 and yet again in 1946.

The song, later recorded by many artists including Hank Snow and Elvis Presley, became a country classic.

I remember it from when I was a little kid.
