... it's called a 'sight' rhyme and quite legitimate. (although some modern judges may not agree)
Many of the classic poets used this.

I'll try and pull up some examples ...

Lots of examples Manfred but still doesn't scan for me.
May look alright on the page (hence the term sight rhyme) but jars when it is said.
Robert W Service (one of my heroes) tries to get away with calm and damn in the Shooting of Dan McGrew:
Then his lips went in in a kind of grin, and he spoke, and his voice was calm,
And "Boys," says he, "you don't know me, and none of you care a damn;
Just doesn't work!

Lionel Long recorded a version in the early sixties I think
