Film about louisa Lawson. (Henry's Mother )

Post by Duncan Williams » Wed May 17, 2017 2:43 pm

A Sydney resident Mrs Hush, has a connection to Bush Poet Henry Lawson. Mrs Hush Said, "Dear Henry, my grandmother use to bath and clean him up after the police had beaten him. My grandmothers family had the Dinds Hotel in North Sydney. he was a frequent visitor and wrote a poem about it. my Grandfather had encouraged Henry to go bush again. Mrs Hush said " if i had time in my life i would have loved to have made a film about Louisa Lawson. (Henry's Mother.)

THE BATTLING DAYS.

So sit you down in a straight-backed chair, with your pipe and wife content,
and cross your knees with the wisest air and the preach of the days misspent.
grown fat and moral apace old man you prate of the change since then -
in spite of it all i'd as lief be back in those hard old days again.

Henry Lawson. (1867 - 1922)

Hi Duncan

That's an interesting piece of history you've shared. I have to agree with Mrs Hush that Louisa Lawson's life would make a great film. She truly was a remarkable woman, way ahead of her time.

I can just imagine the reaction of the "establishment" when she elected to employ only women printers at her publishing company in the 1880s!

One only has to read Louisa's poetry to see where Henry's talent came from. I particularly enjoy performing her poem "A Pound a Mile" - which keeps the audience in suspense, making them assume it will be a tragic tale of outback death, until they hear the surprise happy ending, which leaves everyone uplifted!

Maybe some enterprising film-maker will one day take up the challenge - even if historical stories are being eclipsed these days by superheroes and wizards!!

Cheers

Shelley, there are a group of dedicated film professionals that are planning to bring to life the stories of our most popular bush rangers. They have done
The Legend of Ben Hall and are currently planning The Legend of Ned Kelly - all based on historic truth.
Perhaps they could be persuaded to look at - when they have finished - extending their range and include the likes of Louisa Lawson?!
They are canvassing crowd funding and investors currently.
You never know - they may well be able to be convinced on the merit of the idea!! :)
What goes around, comes around.

That's interesting, Irene.

Perhaps if you have contact with these people, the idea could be suggested.
