The Weekend Oz

Interesting article in the Weekend Oz Magazine by Nikki Gemmell on learning to recite things by memory - namely poetry.

Don't know how to post a link - but it's a great supportive voice for our bush poetry traditions.

The link is below, but it'll only get you the first paragraph. You've got to pay to subscribe to the online version of Rupert's Rag!

As Marty says, it is a good, supportive article for bush poetry. Although Gemmell quotes an American University professor who says: "If we do not learn by heart, the heart does not feel the rhythms of poetry as echoes or variations of its own insistent beat." That seems to be pushing things a bit too far. As someone who has memorised vast reams of stuff for stage performances over the years, I reckon reading aloud from a script can hold its own with a memorised performance. If you can't see two performers (as, say, on radio), with one reading and one reciting from memory, I'd challenge anyone to pick the difference...unless, of course, the reciter forgets his/her lines! What's important, as I've said in another thread, is working to develop our vocal skills...whether that's via reading or memorising is a matter of 'horses for courses'.

Cheers
David

I found the whole article by typing in " The Word had passed around "

I could not find a contact but I think it would be a good idea to send Nikki an invite to visit our site ?

They can write all the articles they like about memorising, it won't make my tired old brain one day younger. I can't remember where I left my glasses five minutes ago.

Didn't she write 'The Bride Stripped Bare'? Or am I on the wrong tram?

No . . bit too "50 shades of" for my liking.

Apparently she writes a lot in second person. Different.

Second person, eh? I guess that's why she was reluctant to put her name to it...
