A consensus of opinion please

Where does it stand?

I had written a poem at the request of a lady who gave me a quarter of the story and I invented the rest. I sent it in to a comp (a very small one) and received a Commended. The poem was very long.. so I revised the whole thing and gave it a very substantial re-write so that it is pretty much, not the same poem. The beginning and the ending (except for the last line) are basically different. The middle has been chopped and altered but the story line remains.

Can I now enter it in competitions that state 'not previous' entered or having won anything? I did want to leave the title the same. ... then again if I change the title would that make it a different poem? what do you think? And if the judge, happens to be the same as the one who has previously read and marked it, do you think they will recognise that it has been heavily re-written?

I love the story and think it has potential.

It seem it is demonstrably not that same poem. Go for it. I would.

Hi Xondrae, in my opinion you should be the one to judge it first and foremost, and write (or rewrite) until it's the poem you love and are satisfied with. And then, if the judges don't fancy it, so what, you still do ;) Cheers Sandy

Psst ;) Sandy - its Zondrae with a Zee

I reckon go for it Zondrae because it isn't the same poem really is it - its an expansion on the original theme/idea and you say substantially different so IMO it is a different piece of work altogether. Retitle it and let if fly.

Cheers

Maureen

Shouldn't be a problem, Zondrae, given the substantial changes you've made. Besides, there aren't many competitions that exclude poems that have been previously entered elsewhere and/or have won a Commended award. Given the other responses above, there would seem to be a consensus!

Good luck with the poem.
David

Thanks to everyone who replied.

I will give it a go. I feel the story line is solid, the second version dropped a lot of the unnecessary clutter and therefor is by far a more well constructed poem. I will throw it in the next comp. I think there are a couple closing soon.
