Leonard Teale was highly regarded for his readings of bush poetry. I think you are right Bill.
However what I was talking about was originals. readings by the original writers or someone contemporary to a writer who knew them. Do you know what I mean ? :)

I heard an old recording on the radio of Dylan Thomas reciting one of his famous poems A Childs Christmas in Wales I think it was. That was VERY interesting to hear.
I also have a CD and an MP3 file of Les Murray reading his own poems, I am sure that will become a colllectors item one day.

Neville as I said before the National Library in Canberra has an ongoing program of recording the type of thing you are suggesting and I know that there was (maybe still is) grants and training available for people wanting to record ordinary Australians.
I know that Chris Woodland who often writes various articles in the ABPA magazine is involved in recording for the National Library. Rob Willis is also an active collector of Australian folk history and avid recorder of musicians, singers and artists.
I will endeavour to find out more for you.
There are numerous recordings of Leonard Teale reciting bush poetry and they may be obtainable on the net.

I met Keith McKenry years ago in Mulwala. A very educated & fine gentleman he is. I was also blessed to see performances by Charlee, Johnny Philipson, & bless her, Gertrude Skinner...lucky mee!
This sounds like a good project for the ABPA.......if.......anyone has the time. I would if I could. Maybe one day. Perhaps we could give the National Library a shove? Even if we BEGIN to collate our modern day poets' work, in due course, & time, they would be 'treasures' simply because sooner or later...well later, our work will be 'way back when' & surely considered of historical value....??

This has been something I've been toying with for a little while now.
We, as an Association need to preserve our Culture

The preservation is a two pronged process,
1. Gathering and preserving existing material
2. gathering deceased material from private collections

There are copyright issues amongst a swag of others that need addressing,
however my juices are boiling.

Let's continue this conversation and roll with this .... I'll stare another thread relating to preservation of our works ...

Neville Briggs wrote: Another thought that I had about the program was how similar in some ways the cowboy song tradition was to the Australian bush poetry, yet how different. Similar experiences of wide outdoors, hard life with stock and pioneering spirit, but very different modes of expression used. I don't think that the two could live side by side that well.
Hey Neville,
Milton & I had this concern before we performed in the USA at The Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko Nevada. We need never have worried. The two lived very well side by side & we were very well received by the generous 'septic tanks.' The only glitch I hit was with 'chook'....they didn't know what a chook was! They call them chickens or hens. It was a fabulous tour & from Elko to Los Angeles they understood & loved our Aussie verse.
