Homework for May '23. A Crossroad of Seasons.

Post by Ron » Sat May 20, 2023 2:45 pm

Have been dragging the chain a bit, but this is a true story that happened Two weekends ago. Just in time for Maureen's prompts.
Only a slight bit of embellishment here and there. :D

A Crossroad of Seasons.
© Ron Boughton May ‘23.

The waters of Lake Windamere lapped calmly on the shore
a campfire crackling, glowing red! Who’d dare to ask for more?
The rising moon’s full rounded face was peaking through the gums
and bodies of celestial lights, so bright, showed Winter comes,
The billy boiling, and, the jaffle irons on the coals
projected visions that, no doubt, could lift the darkest souls.
But only grins of happiness, on these nights did belong
when camping with the family out on the Cudgegong.

On leaving home we’d travelled up the Castlereagh Highway
a road well known by Henry -written in another day-
And came a spot where Poplars showed seasonal change unfold
displaying turning coloured leaves to stunning yellow gold!
And on the hills beyond the road tranquility abounds
where peacefully the sheep graze, in their woolly winter gowns!
The air was rather chilly when we’d stopped for a brew,
but when the sun drilled in the back, it warmed the bones right through!

And now, it was the campfires heat, was warming to the bone
a fact, that all three dogs we took, there said we weren’t alone!
The early morn’ saw rising mist that camouflaged the lake
in silent stillness, that hung around, till most were all awake.
Then campfire brekky beckoned, and, hot choc mugs like hugs be
but really, campfire comfort is the stalwart …billy tea!
Then followed perfect weather, with the only thing required
embracing relaxation, which …serenity inspired!

Another night of campfire bliss, though showers came next day,
but being part of camping’s mix, are skies of blue and …grey!
Then all packed up and heading home (we'd heard the day’s forecast)
for as we reached Wallerawang, we struck the polar blast!
Snowflakes are kisses from heaven, but sleet is the devil’s work
as windscreen wipers struggled, to give vision through the murk!
But when at last safely home, thoughts turned to a glass of red
and most importantly! Put flannelette sheets on the bed.

G/day Ron

Sounds like a great weekend mate.

Your poem is full of memorable lines that paint a perfect picture,
I could well imagine I was there with you.

Wouldn't mind sharing in that glass of red either.

Cheers

Terry

Thanks Terry, yes it was a great weekend, Friday and Saturday were absolutely perfect. Sunday wasn't too bad in the morning but turned into a shocker! Plus the weekend before was torrential rain all weekend! So have to strike it lucky sometimes I guess! :D
I must admit, I did give you a thought at times when I was writing it! ;)
Cheers mate
Ron.

Ah, totally agree with Terry here, Ron - there are some wonderful lines here that paint a very clear picture so that you take us along with you. I'd forgotten what sleet was like too - haven't seen that in decades and no wish to, ha! Really enjoyed this poem.

Hi Catherine and Shelley,
Many thanks for your kind words, much appreciated.

Catherine, yes I can totally understand, having no wish to see sleet again! :D

And Shelley, I know exactly what you mean getting the "itch"! :D

Cheers
Ron.

Oh you are allowed to drag the chain Ron - we all do at times - life happens. Having lived in a Caravan with kid and dog for a period of around 8 months I related to your poem.
Caravaning can be great fun but when the weather Gods turn against you - not so much :o As for the flannelette sheets -I totally agree - you won me

Thanks so much Maureen, and great to see you back on deck, and yes, we all need a recharge of the batteries now and again. :)
It was a great weekend and that 'weather factor' makes all the difference all right. :D
Cheers
Ron.

ps. I saw your mention on Terry's posts of sharing our poems to your fb site. Please feel free to share any of mine if you feel might be suitable.

Oh thank you Ron - that is very kind and I will delight in doing so - drop on over to the page and say G'day ... it's not in opposition with ABPA - I do the best I can to promote that as well. https://www.facebook.com/AustralianRhymingPoets
