Homework 20/1/23 "January 6th."

Post by Ron » Fri Jan 20, 2023 3:04 pm

‘January 6th’
© Ron Boughton 20/1/23
When all democracy is threatened, because they didn’t like the vote,
And urged all supporters, the parliament to smote!
And ‘for the people by the people’ in a void of darkness falls,
But from the depths of sanity, common sense calls!
For how the mighty can be fallen, from their citadels of wealth
When hidden agendas are exercised by stealth!
Wherein the law is bypassed to the point of ridicule by greed,
That, in delusion, then becomes their steadfast creed!

And now the halls of justice, should see perpetrators front the bar,
And see return of honour, heal a vicious scar!
For liberty was dealt a blow, through shameful, treacherous deceit
With memories made, hopefully, never to repeat!
No violins or golden guitars, should play a final swan song
But maybe, the toll of a single lonely gong!
When seeing the departure, of those, who flaunt blatantly the rules,
And have trouble realising …that not all are fools!

Ah yes, Ron, I see we were walking similar pathways here with the prompts. Such lines as: "When hidden agendas are exercised by stealth" and "Wherein the law is bypassed to the point of ridicule by greed" are great - as are those last two! I've read this poem several times over and really enjoyed it. There is much truth in it.... "Not all are fools" indeed - and these days I so often find myself hoping and praying that "from the depths of sanity, common sense calls!"

Many thanks Catherine, I always appreciate your feedback.
Yes, when I read your poem I could see we were on a somewhat similar theme with the prompts,
I was going to make it longer and include the despots of other countries but I think it would have dragged on a bit.
Probably could do with a bit of a polish though. :)
Thanks again for your kind comments.
Cheers
Ron.

G/day Ron

I think you have covered it perfectly without worrying about adding any more to it Ron.
You paint a pretty good picture of politics around the world today, it's a rotten business.
And no country is immune from it either.
And of course, the winners can appoint their own like-minded officials.

A well thought out and very well written poem, I really enjoyed reading it.

Thanks Terry,
Yes, it's a dirty business alright, and sickening when, because of immense wealth, they don't like taking no for an answer!
Pleased that you enjoyed it mate.
Cheers
Ron

Whilst taking an interest, I have found it difficult in the past to respond to Maureen's prompts but thought I should give it a go.

The empty void of darkness sends a shiver down my spine,
as leaders make decisions after drinking too much wine.
For how the mighty fall from grace when fronting up the bar
not sure of what their purpose is or who they really are.

It’s all about appearances and we are not immune,
with leaders like guitars of gold that sound so out of tune.
Return of honour is a dream and we will pay the price
for perks and pensions they receive as proceeds of their vice.

You made great use of the prompts Ron - well done.

Politics it seems has always had a murky side and interesting that both you and Catherine zoomed in on that. I enjoyed reading your poem - thank you

Good to see you here David - I will get Shelley to put this up in its own right as it will get lost in comments.

Many thanks Maureen for taking the time to read and comment.
I always find the prompts a mind game challenge. In fact the homework assignments are really the only poetry I seem to write these days, maybe I just need prompting (pun intended )! But maybe at some stage, the muse will kick in again and take on other challenges. :D
Cheers
Ron.
