Homework 6/Sep/ Statues in the Lake

Post by Terry » Tue Aug 31, 2021 2:12 pm

Very rushed this month.
The Statues in Lake Ballard are real enough.

STATUES IN THE LAKE
Bills been on the slops again as usual, and he’s crook today,
yet he’d driven way out to a lake, that's many miles away.
Ballard is a salt-lake where some weird statues now reside
and supposed to have been copies of nude people with no pride.

Two snags short of a barbie, all of them, if you’re asking me,
such grotesque and ugly looking things you’ll ever likely see.
Bill had decided that a hair of the dog was needed now,
just to stop that box of hammers crashing in his skull somehow.

Trouble is with Bill, that first small sip - a pathway into hell,
where hallucinations and the horrors manifest as well.
Useless as a chocolate teapot he then stagers to the lake,
coming face to face there with a statue - more than he can take.

He starts screaming at the sight of it and must get out of there,
only then to see great hideous like monsters everywhere.
Sure this is a warning, and the lord has given him a nudge,
when he makes it to his ute, he’s now as sober as a judge.

Good yarn Terry! Interesting that these prompts have spawned "yarn" type poems for a few of us!

Pretty rough Shelley - needs a lot of work to really make sense.
I might rewrite it later with someone arriving there late at night a little worse for wear.
And unaware of whats out there on the lake, on a real spooky, spooky night.

Or something like that.

Brings a chuckle to the dial Terry. I googled the Lake to check it out and I see what you mean about the statues! Certainly be worse if you’re in a state of the horrors mate!! :D

Thanks Ron

I've prospected out near there, with some success as well.
We used to come in from Menzies, a small town with a pub but not much more.
I used to drive on past but never bothered to stop and have a closer look.
Too keen to get to where hopefully the gold was.

Cheers

Well, this brought me a smile this morning, Terry! Really enjoyed this, and I hadn't known about the statues either so have now Googled them of course and found it most interesting, so thanks for the education as well!

Thanks Catherine

Very rushed, and more of an idea than an actual poem I reckon.

Good one Terry - and you made good use of the prompts in the story as well.

I was completely unaware of these statues until your poem popped up - I was aware of some in UK on Crosby beach, these are actually very lifelike and would indeed give one a nasty turn if unaware of them https://www.visitliverpool.com/things-t ... ey-p160981

Thanks for sharing that with us - it is amazing what we learn from each other isn't it.
