Homework 16/8/21 Eighty Five Years On.

Eighty Five Years On.
© Ron Boughton 2/8/21

Way back in Nineteen Thirty Six, when Jesse won Four gold!
It did not fit! a seething, Adolf Hitlers mould,
For gold was for the Aryans his blinkered vision stressed
And if the world weren’t watching, he’d be under arrest.
But this was just an inkling of the darkest days ahead,
And rather than unite the world, it polarized instead.

But now the modern era of Olympics if compared
Shows much more racial tolerance with many a culture shared
Though politics at times does still, involve its messy head
But mainly in the doping issues where some athletes tread!
There is no shortage of star power in the sports elite
So never! should any, have to jump fences to compete!

Our green and gold flag bearers have both really done us proud,
And ‘true blue’ is the essence of their image to enshroud,
And same can be said for all the team, who in Tokyo,
Are there competing on the stage, of sportings greatest show!
Where reaching for gold is, the pinnacle of aspiration
But just to make it and compete, earns utmost admiration!

Oh well done - a little bit of history as well there. I think these games, for all of their strangeness have actually seen countries competitors being more compassionate towards each other - perhaps the penny is starting to drop that we are all citizens of one world - Covid, horrible as it is, is uniting us.

Oh yes, very good, Ron. Whilst the issue of politics unfortunately does rear its persistent head in just about everything nowadays, it's great to see people uniting in something at this time, especially as a positive change from all the ugly division often seen on social media since the pandemic began.

Many thanks Maureen and Catherine, glad that you enjoyed it.
Yes and you maybe right there, if there is any positives to come out of this damned virus!
