The Quest

The Quest.
© Ron Boughton May/21

Old Aussie lingo! in verse! crikey, well gawd strike me pink!
It’s rattled me old brainbox, really makin’ me think,
I’d even asked old Bluey, the cook at the rubbity dub
But he was busy feedin’ his face, with his own rough grub,
So that door was closed, and yep, I was doing it real tough,
And if, were in a game of golf I’d be out in the rough!
Although, it wasn’t like, a heavy haversack to carry,
But to find a solution, I’d be happy as Larry!

And then, chancing on Bluey’s bro’s, Meggsie and Carrot Top
Destroying a few amber fluids, not wasting a drop,
‘’Do ya’ think it’s bush week!” they said, when I sounded them out,
“Fair crack of the whip mate! we ain’t finished breakin’ the drought!”
So scratching my melon pondering, on this issue of verse
I spied a Jimmy Woodser, but, no chance there to converse,
Then I asked this dandy cove, a real flash sort of a coot
Only then to be told, “sorry, I gotta’ go splash the boot!”

Then a blow-in who’d overheard came over quietly and spoke,
And he turned out to be, a fair dinkum, bonzer sort of bloke!
He said to write Aussie verse, you have to really unwind
Be as game as Ned Kelly and Russell Coight combined!
And, there’s no need to go flat out like a lizard drinking
Just harness your thoughts, then, project in positive thinking!
So I thought then and there, gawd strewth! you old son of a gun!
My shout! and, ear twigging all that info …I’ll get that verse done!

G/day Ron

You have certainly covered a multitude of old Aussie words and sayings there mate,
reminds me of the odd session in a country pub in my younger days (MUCH YOUNGER!).

I enjoyed the read, so well done mate.

Well done Ron - you squeezed in a bit more than your two bobs worth with this effort. I liked it and the angle you took to get there

Ned Kelly and Russell Coight :o Now there's two different characters. I confess that Russell cracks me up for his sheer ineptitude whilst managing to look the part of a typical Aussie bushman.

Oh yes, Ron, very clever - and like Terry's poem, definitely brings smiles! This is Aussie lingo through and through - You really did 'get this verse done' well!

You must have really rattled the brainbox to come up with that treasure trove, Ron!
