Stan's the Man.

Stan’s the Man.
©Ron Boughton.
The Kookaburras guffawed and the black crows cawed
When he said that he had a heart of gold,
For the not so honest Stan was a used car man
With deceitful deals to his name untold.
And a scarred red bulbous nose had felt many blows
For the warranty on cars that he’d sold!
And where once he would bewitch with polished sales pitch
His spiel now left him out in the cold!

Yes long gone were the slick days, where in so many ways
He could easily charm the skin off a snake,
And being fond of the plonk, this gold medal shonk
Had no credibility, with his handshake!
And in his drinking confusion he suffered delusion,
In proportion to his alchohol intake,
Instead of acting his age, he’d claim centre stage
And to reality he’d rarely awake!

There were times he’d think he’d be, footloose and fancy free
Only to find later from stares much aghast
That it was the wobbly boot and he didn’t look cute
With his strides so often worn at half mast!
Jumping to wrong conclusions, his drunken illusions
There portrayed a suitable moment cast
For a seat in politics, he’d contest the mix
As his perfect resume’ could not be outclassed!

A very imaginative use of the prompts, Ron!

I think we've all known a "Stan the Man" in our time!

Cheers

Why does Sir Les Patterson creep into my mind reading this

You've made good use of the prompts with you depiction of a sleazy used car salesman and there have been a few of them over the years as well. Good to see a 'wobbly boot' make an appearance - that's a phrase that seems to be disappearing. Do used car salesmen make good politicians?

Thank you Shelley And Maureen, Much appreciated.

Ah Yes, good one, I hadn't drawn that comparison with Sir Les! That icon of Australian culture!!
Don't know if I'd buy a used car off him though!

I liked that Ron

The play on rhyme throughout each stanza worked well I reckon.

I'd say 'Stan the Man' would fit in very well into Politics, using what we already have as a yardstick!

Cheers Terry

A great character poem, Ron, with clever use of the prompts. I can clearly picture Stan the Man - and yes, we've all known a few of these! Really enjoyed this poem.

Many thanks Terry And Catherine, pleased you both liked it.

Yes I reckon Stan would ring a bell with many people Catherine

and I agree Terry the political yardstick we have leaves a bit to be desired! :?
