MUD PUDDLING

MUD PUDDLING
Allan Cropper ©

I like to wiggle my toes in the mud
and bury myself in the sand,
rip off my shirt,
roll about in the dirt,
most people would not understand.
The wet and the cool of the squishiest mud,
the warm of the of the sun and the sand.
Dirt on my skin
oh, just how to begin
to tell you how happy I am.
Yes, I would do all the above if I could,
but there's nothing that feels quite so good
as the ooze as it flows
through the gaps in my toes
when I wiggle my toes in the mud.
So, next when you see it's been raining all week
and the ground is as wet as can be,
Why not hurry around
where there's mud to be found
and come do some mud puddling with me.

Great poem Allan! It's raining here now (the predicted wild SE Queensland weather has started!!!) - do you think I should find a mud puddle?

Are you aware of the upcoming Toolangi CJ Dennis written poetry competition which has a section for kids' poetry written by adults? You should take a look at it. I'm sure Stephen posted something about it here in the Forum, but anyway, here's the link:

Thanks Shelley

I hadn't given a great deal of thought to entering poetry competitions, much less a competition as prestigious as the Toolangi CJ Dennis written poetry competition. Maybe I will give it a go. :D

Does it matter if poems you wish to submit in competitions have been posted in this forum or other poetry sites?

Not usually - as long as they haven't previously won prizes or been published for the profit of the author. However every competition's rules are slightly different, so it pays to read the conditions through before entering.

I really think you should give it a go - especially in the "adults writing for children" section. I know you have more in that genre. There are two sets of judges for this particular section - an adult judge, but also the poems are judged by children. It's fun to see what the kids pick :)

As well as monetary prizes and certificates, winners and place-getters are published in an anthology.

New entrants are always welcome in this competition - and you never know, it just might pay off :)

Cheers
