MAN on the MOON
(By Alan McCosker october 2020)

It’s difficult at times, when you reminisce about,
places you’ve been and things that you’ve seen.
But there are the times when a significant event,
holds in your mind a never forgotten scene.

It was in the winter of nineteen 69 , on a Monday 21st of July,
outside the wind was a fury, lifting the lino up from the floor.
Up on the hill, in our quarters that night, after teatime had gone by,
we all moved into the TV room and pulled shut the verandah door.

Outside the banshees were howling most mournfully,
a portend of the weather the gods had in store.
The iron on the roof creaked and rattled quite loudly,
with each moaning gust, rain blew under the door.

A fire was lit in the old smoke blackened hearth
we rugged up, pulled all the chairs into place.
Spread out our hands to encompass the warmth
boiled the kettle and poured a coffee apiece.

In front of the old rented black & white television
we waited; for a news story that was coming on soon.
For the boss he had heard, on the radio early on,
Apollo eleven had touched down on the moon.

We sipped at the coffee, a couple of durries were lit
we sat mostly silent in that small TV room.
Then we watched in wonder, as a man in a space suit,
descended the ladder and stepped onto the moon.

It’s difficult at times, when you reminisce about,
places you’ve been and things that you’ve seen,
but on that station outback , I’ll not for-get the night ;
I saw Neil Armstrong, become the man on the moon.
