The Settlers

THE SETTLERS
(By Alan McCosker1983 revised October 2020)

They crossed the Blue Mountains with Blaxland and Wentworth
knocked up their shanties and planted the good earth,
they cleared it and cropped it and brought in their sheep
and vowed that forever this country they’d keep.

In a land that was so far removed from their own
they struggled and battled and made it their home,
then they brought in their families who raised plenty more,
free Australians to live on this desolate shore.

From Convict to Freeman from Trader to Lord
we all owe a lot to the Settlers of old,
they made this great country a home for the brave
with the blood and the sweat they so readily gave.

To the North and the South they trekked with their flocks
over the Simpson’s plains covered with rocks,
to the Kimberley mountains and o’er the divide,
with only a hope and a prayer at their side.

To the West, to the West, was the Settlers loud call
to the North and the South the Settlers walked tall,
from Van Diemans land to the tip of Cape York
they carved out a nation with bloody hard work.

They battled the bushfires ran from the floods
when drought came they cried bitter tears to their gods,
but they’d keep up the struggle till the season would pass
then after the rains came they’d dance in new grass.

The Settlers of old were folk of great cheer
with courage and faith they rarely knew fear,
they faced the unknown with faith and a song
our memory of them, should live on and on.

From Convict to Freeman from Trader to Lord
we all owe a lot to the Settlers of old,
they made this great country a home for the brave
with the blood and the sweat they so readily gave.

A fine tribute, Alan! We certainly do owe a lot to our forebears who stamped their heritage on this nation.

Thanks Shelley,
I hope that as we become more and more a global, multicultural society,we don't forget the people who were
an important part of our journey.
Cheers Alan
