LIGHT UP THE CANDLES

LIGHT UP THE CANDLES
Come light up the candles, it's time to reflect
on another year under the belt.
Another year older, another year wiser -
O how I wish that's how it felt!
With each passing year, now I notch up the trips
to the chemist, the doctor, the 'quack',
and the times I'm stretched out on the physio's bench
to relieve all this pain in my back.
Come light up the candles, and gather to sing
happy birthday, happy birthday to me
And I'll slice the cake, though I must not partake
due to my doctor's orders, you see.
I must not eat sugar, it's bad for my health,
and gluten plays up with my tum,
and freshly whipped cream, well that's now just a dream
lest I want a gargantuan bum.
Come light up the candles, take care not to burn
your fingers, or start a house fire.
There's barely the room on the top of the cake
to fit all the candles required.
I've now reached that point where I don't have the breath
to blow out the candles alone.
So children come gather and we'll blow together
I'll pretend I did it on my own.
Come light up the candles, and cross off the year,
another twelve months tucked away,
and wish if you will, for happy returns
while I secretly wish for the day
when I will not need for this little charade,
the candles, the cake and good cheer.
But I'm not going yet, so it's a safe bet
that you'll light up more candles next year.
