SWIMMING IN HEATED DARK CHOCOLATE


“Like swimming in heated dark chocolate” I heard a musician say,
describing a piece of music she was about to play,
and true to her word, the melody oozed throughout every pore,
a haunting and cosy alliance, the audience clamoured for more.

Performance that I’ve long remembered, though it happened years ago,
that piece whenever I hear it, sets my whole being aglow,
a breath-taking sensation, a truffle’s spell on the tongue,
taste buds thick with fulfilment, spring full of blossoms has sprung.

Oh, if all presentations, could be as arresting as this,
my respectful appreciation would unstintingly focus on bliss,
the swimmer in heated dark chocolate entirely instilled in my heart,
a long lasting representation of sweet and melodic fine art.

Thanks Maureen & Catherine. It was at a wonderful concert at Brisbane Customs House. The performer obviously enjoyed the music as much as the audience.

Just lovely, Jeff! Concerts like that are simply unforgettable - I know I've previously likened singing voices to "burnished copper". There is nothing quite like music that speaks to the heart - and the human voice is the most exquisite instrument of all.

So you play piano too, Catherine? Something else we have in common - how lovely! A few years ago I wrote a poem about my wonderful childhood music teacher who was a great influence on my young life. Her name was Miss Violet Leslie, she lived to the age of 105 and her memory continues to inspire me. My poem "The Music Teacher" was highly commended in the 2014 Blackened Billy. Glad you liked it Shelley. I wouldn't say I'm a classical music "buff" however, that particular performance remains in my memory.

Thank you so much Jeff! My music teacher was a remarkable lady, and the "piano man" is one of those wonderful characters unique to Australia. I say "is" because purely by chance through a mutual acquaintance we recently made contact with him again ... and yes, he is still working on his beloved pianos, though not travelling quite as far these days.

Beautiful poem Shelley - I can really relate to this one! It also brought back so many memories of going to my first teacher's home while Mum sat outside in the car in every season waiting for me (as she often still likes to remind me!) Mrs Pike also lived to a ripe old age, although was a bit sterner than your teacher I think as I don't know why Mum couldn't wait inside with a cup of tea, ha! Anyway, congratulations on a well deserved HC for this lovely piece of work, and I'm delighted to hear that you play. I'm somewhat rusty these days but can still quite happily spend a couple of hours at a time at my piano. As far as I'm concerned, music and poetry are gifts to the soul.
