The Cocky's Ute

30 years together
She never let me down
Chasing sheep and cattle
Hauling bales of hay
For three or four years
She was the family car
The old EH ute
The best Holden ever made

256 thousand miles
Hasn't missed a beat
Starting to look at little old
Bloody rust in every panel
A dent from the time
I backed into the shearing shed
The seat is torn and lumpy
Chucked a rug on it - good as new

She goes too
She really bloody goes
Got to fifty going into town
Rattling and shaking
The hole in the exhaust
Makes it a bit loud
Ran over two white posts
Last week going to town

Bloody new cop in town
He pulled me up
G'day mate I said
Friendly as hell
He says the ute's a bit noisy
Wotdoyamean I says back
You sound like a bloody
Truck coming down the road

We looked under the ute
Crikey the muffler was gone
Probably on a stump
Up in the back paddock
I'll have to book you
Bloody hell young fella
Alright go and get a new one
Jimmy Young'll look after you

The horn doesn't work
Big crack in the windscreen
One wiper blade
Slam it and it'll stay shut
Dents and rust all over
Rough as guts to look at
But by crikey you lot
It's as quiet as a mouse

Hey you blokes the only thing Yankee about me is my address.
I have been writing for about 10 years, I am not sure what I am doing but I enjoy it. I kind of write as i talk, rambling along.
I read a review a few years ago that I thought put down rhyming and I just started writing like this.
I joined a couple of sites hoping to get more advice and develop a bit.
Do you think rhyming is best for bush poetry?

"Do you think rhyming is best for bush poetry?"

Nah, we don't 'think' about it Phil, it's just what we do. We do our stuff in rhyme and metre ... :)

Australian Bush Poetry is metred and rhymed poetry about Australia, Australians and/or the Australian way of life.

There's a lot of help here to grow and perfect our Craft using rhyme and metre.

Welcome Phil, and enjoy your stay with us ... :D

Manfred.

G'daaay Phil !! Welcome Mate.

I've been AWOL for a while...mooooving to 9 hours away....so you won't have read any of my ramblings I guess. Just to put you in the picture...I think I'm the sorta Matriarch of all who suffer the rhyming blues on here. So I'll sort ya out lickety split, if ya like?...with ya poems that is....

Anyway....I just want to share a truly trooo story about 'utes'. Milton Taylor & I were performing in the USA, & after the first gig (when we were being mobbed by fans & paparratzi...lol..) we were stood behind the product counter trying to flog our wares. Milton is famous for writing about dogs & utes, & dogs IN utes, & he had a book with the title, 'My Ute'.
Now fair dinkum...no joke...this Yankie bloke was looking at Milton's book with a very bewildered look on his face....so, my being the healer of all woes & bringer of joy to all...urged me to enquire of the said Yankie about said bewilderment....& fair dinkum....turned out that he thought Milton ''had his own Indian.'' (''My Ute''...get it?)

Trooooo!

Like your work Mate. We'll crack ya, no worries.
