Nothing Stays the Same

Nothing Stays the Same

When the door clicks shut behind him,
Just before the lights switch on
Then the seconds last for hours
And he sees what’s been and gone
There is neither fear nor favour,
There is just the weight of choices
Hollow sound of empty kitchen
As opposed to children’s voices
He assures himself the future
Will not either bless or blame
The one thing that never changes
Is that nothing stays the same

She has lost track of the times
That she reached for the telephone
Just to hear another person
Tell her she is not alone
Little things remind her daily,
Markers she cannot define
Places at the dinner table,
Spaces on the washing line
These are just the indicators
To the truth she dare not name
The one thing that never changes
Is that nothing stays the same

They rely upon each other
More than little hearts could know
Sibling rivalry forgotten
While they’re ‘going with the flow’
Working out the new arrangements
What is which and who is where?
Only needing re-assurance
That they both will still be there
They know by the strength of words
That this is not a schoolyard game
The one thing that never changes
Is that nothing stays the same

Together they were loosely linked
Looser still now they’re apart
Not the kind to clutch or cling
But always in the others heart
Love forms links that do not break
Even when promises fail
Even when the questions linger
Love has strength that will prevail
Father, Mother, Children, still
A family, by any name
The one thing that never changes
Is that nothing stays the same

He will one day beat his demons
Now he looks them in the eye
She will de-construct her walls
Or at least begin to try
Little ones will grow and prosper
With the love that’s guaranteed
All of them will help each other
Separate the want from need
They have neither lost nor won
For there are no prizes to claim
The one thing that never changes
Is that nothing stays the same

You had me glued to it from the very first line. I could hear the door click and feel the emptiness. You've got a way with words.

I could sense that it is personal Hully - the most powerful poems usually are.

How about this for a quote: If you are not riding the wave of change, you will find yourself beneath it." I kinda like that one.

Heather :)
