HAND IN HAND

HAND IN HAND

(c) Jeff Thorpe 12 August 2017

Technology and I work hardly hand in hand,
as connections go, we’re clearly poles apart,
any relationship is indeed built on sand,
emphatically no Bacall and Bogart.

PINS and passwords leave me baffled,
they are oh so easy to forget,
I’m an old lag led up to the scaffold,
my word most often used is “reset”.

And mobile phones, just don’t get me started,
the bloody things need charging every day,
with fees also not for the fainthearted,
the Telcos well know how to make one pay.

The NBN, I fear, will also give me strife
on what I’ve heard from others who’re connected,
as if I need another thing to complicate my life,
Telstra’s bad enough to get me all dejected.

Also about phones, is there anyone to talk to,
after pressing buttons one two and three,
“your call is important to us” always comes on cue
but, a human there to answer mostly absentee.

Want to know anything, all revolves around an App,
the tech word that’s gained access to the tongue,
a software program (I think) something like a map,
to a luddite like me, it’s a melody unsung.

“A service to keep all your devices in sync”
describes I Cloud, somewhere in cyberspace,
left to my devices, I’ll take refuge in a drink,
happy in my limited knowledge base.

Does anyone recall an item called a letter?
or maybe a tool called a fountain pen,
what about a landline no charging, even better,
relics of an era called “remember when”.

Have you ever heard of a typewriter “crashing”
or in a book, “this page can’t be displayed”,
isn’t a “mouse”, a rodent deserving of a thrashing
while “saving” allows for debts to be repaid.

Yet, grudgingly I’ve been forced into this modern sphere
kicking and screaming all the way,
no use longing for the past when faced with now and here,
but hand in hand, more like a melee.

Definitely a very "telling" tale, Jeff!

I keep a little die-cast model of a typewriter next to my computer - just to remind myself where we've come from!!

Cheers

Thanks Shelley. I'm putting out hints for a fountain pen as a Christmas present.

Regards, Jeff
