Yes, I enjoyed it too, Wendy. Has it been published?

Reminds me of a poem I wrote. Here it is.

Socks!

© Stephen Whiteside 19.11.10

Our men are all keen to enlist.
Or, if they are not, we insist.
A light feather, white,
Soon sets their minds right.
It’s a message that’s hard to resist.

Socks. Socks. Socks.
It’s a labour of love, not a chore.
It’s a nice little shove
From Heaven above,
And we’re all knitting socks for the War.

To the trenches the soldiers all swarm,
In the face of the oncoming storm.
They might lose an eye
As the fast bullets fly,
But at least both their feet will stay warm.

Socks. Socks. Socks.
It’s a labour of love, not a chore.
We’ll warm the boys’ blood
’Gainst the trenches’ cold mud,
And we’re all knitting socks for the War.

It’s a struggle to offer your best
With a bayonet jammed in your chest,
Or your guts all on show,
But we want you to know,
We’ll keep knitting with vigour and zest!

Socks. Socks. Socks.
It’s a labour of love, not a chore.
We’ll heat the lads’ feet
’Gainst the rain and the sleet.
We’ll keep the boys’ glow
Under blankets of snow,
We’ll love them to death
As they draw their last breath,
For we’re all knitting socks for the War!

Don't despair Wendy - it is a very good story - Christmas time is never a good time to get any sense out of people and lots of folks are away and busy which is why the site is always so slow at this time of year apart from the few idiots (not Neville and Stephen) who just try to jolly things along a bit.

Love the irony in that poem Stephen....if your feet are warm and your powder is dry all MUST be right with your world.

Cheers

Maureen

Hi Stephen,
Nice poem....the knitting needle clicking must have been heard for miles around each country town!!

I always do a lot of research before I write something and I came across a new world that I could have waffled on about for ages.

Yes, the book is published and obtainable in either hard copy or an ebook. I have recently got an e-reader and LOVE it!

Idiots - Idiosyncratic daring individuals of two sexes ( I rest my case)

not to be confused with
fools - females or old lags sooking (don't think we have any convicted or particularly sookey females - maybe on occasions when PMT kicks in)

or
morons - males of reckless often Neanderthal standards (wouldn't think any of our blokes are Neanderthal - but some are very reckless)

Nothing wrong with idiots the world is full of them - I am a long standing member myself Bob but anyone is welcome to join

I wondered about those E readers Wendy..you say you love yours which is a great recommendation - can one alter the print size on them??

Yes Maureen you can alter the print size.
The brightness of the screen can also be changed to suit.

I bought a cheapie from K-Mart for $79, it is clear and easy to read and the book covers and illustrations are in colour.
My daughter was given a you-beaut Kindle (over $150) for Christmas.
The major difference is that she has a touch screen and I have to push buttons.

The big advantage is that whereas I like to read before I go to sleep, it irks hubby. Now I don't need the light on at all.
My e-reader came with 100 books already downloaded onto it...
classics and popular titles. I have since downloaded two books from on-line bookshops. There are plenty of free books available or you can pay anything from $1 to whatever....New releases cost about the same as they do in the shops.

Variety is the same as any bookshop - I've even got my eye on a baby crochet pattern book - $3.95
Oh... and you can put photos on it too!
