DEMISE

DEMISE ... Maureen Clifford © The #ScribblyBarkPoet

Our coral reef is under threat - again ... sadly it's true
I wonder why and yet I know the reason.
The animals and other parts of earth that we should treasure
fall through the cracks, and more pass every season.

The media's de-sensitized us all I sadly fear,
more horror shared on media screens each day,
we've hid compassion in the dusty corners of our minds
without reason - now, we just don't care to play.

We wear rose coloured glasses, only see what we must see
as we negotiate through busy lives,
the sweet smell of success just lures us onwards each decade.
We never give a thought how some survive.

And yet things disappear, in a minute, in an instant
they are gone and we are powerless to object.
A war breaks out, the earth's crust cracks, the mother wreaks her vengeance
and all are vulnerable ; now circumspect.

The reminder's often given - we ignore it - we don't care.
Seems imagination's oft in short supply.
Unless it impacts directly onto our selfish lives
it's rare for humans to make much outcry.

It's time to go - the time is now, our reef's coral decreasing,
our earth itself and bees are under threat.
Orca's and other species including mankind perhaps
may soon be something that the world forgets.

Someday , somewhere, eons from now, somebody else might wonder
why one more civilization disappeared.
Perhaps they'll read old documents as our tombs they do plunder
and wonder at our demise which we ourselves engineered.

Too true, Maureen - a very thought-provoking piece.

Hi Maureen
I agree,
and another thing that worries me is that there are those who wish to rewrite our history as well.
I think about our parents and their parents and beyond, they really did it tough compared to how we have it today.
Most didn't have two, two bobs to rub together, but they stuck it out, so that we could reap the rewards of their labors.

Such is life I guess.

Cheers

Thank you Shelley and Terry. I agree with you 100% re those wanting to if not rewrite at least hide the history of past generations. Foolishness beyond belief IMO . Years ago before the advent of our current media devices people were uneducated as to the goings on in the world. News traveled very slowly ... not so today where things are almost instant. Far better for movies, books, statues etc that may depict scenes of racial vilification, to have a notation attached to them, explaining that whilst the scenes depicted were the norm in that era, that they are totally unacceptable by today's standards. After all if you remove the evidence, sanitize the crime scene and dispose of the body you don't even have a case to answer do you?

Very true! If we erase history, how on earth are we going to learn from it??

Hi Maureen

Nothings changed and I doubt it ever will.

I often wonder how we will be judged in say 200 years time?
For all our so called modern ideas and yet doubtful standards,
what are we really?
Flooded with drugs, the pop scene appears to be a drugs rallying point for many young and not so young people,
with lots of the modern idols of today dying from overdoses.

Then there's the terrible wars we have witnessed, the inhuman treatment of various groups often in the name of religion.
the list is endless and it's still going on today. Not necessarily just here but the world over.

Oh yes! we really are the paragons of virtue aren't we - let he who casts the first stone etc. - springs to mind.

Well that's my rant for the year.

Maureen, remember all the joyous celebration at the start of the year 2000, a new century, a new millennium, new hope. Kinda all looks rather forlorn now, what were we celebrating for.  .

I suspect that 2020 will be the year we put on hold - it's not looking good, nothing much is being achieved around the world in economic terms, everything is on hold whilst scientists try desperately to find a cure, and medical personnel try desperately to save lives, whilst a small % (but growing) of the rest of the population seem hell bent on wasting. We are indeed our own worst enemy.

I agree with your comments Terry, but ever the optimist I am hoping that the return of hot weather will kill off covid. I am trusting that common sense will prevail and Australians heed the wake up call and stay home, and I'm hoping that I will be amongst the survivors, because my dog needs me to look out for him.

In the meantime like most of us I guess it is one day at a time, one foot in front o the other and just keep on keeping on. Stay safe everyone and as those recorded messages delight in saying 'You are important to us.'
