EULOGY - FALLING THROUGH THE CRACKS

EULOGY - FALLING THROUGH THE CRACKS ... Maureen Clifford © The #ScribblyBarkPoet

When you cannot keep up with technology, when you give up and won't even try,
then you're left like a leaf in a millpond, whilst the rest of the stream rushes by.
Life doesn't stand still because some folks, are falling behind in the race
it continues its way quite relentless at its frantic and maddening pace.
People fall through the cracks every minute, and their passing is nothing of note
for the rest of the world is indifferent, and there's nought of importance to quote.
We are just like the smoke of the bushfires, here today but tomorrow all gone.
nothing of us left here save our tombstones, and words we wrote as our swan song.

It's perhaps the reason that the Pharoahs built pyramids in days of old.
They knew that these tombs would be noticed, they knew their stories would be told.
And they are despite centuries passing, and we still today wonder with awe
at the mystery of history unfolding, with its secrets revealed we want more.
But our ancestors won't have much viewing of photos left on mobile phones.
Of email letters and our ebooks, a digital world quite forlorn.
We will fall through the cracks of our history, any heritage lost and long gone
and we've killed off our world in our passing - and there's none left to write her swan song.

Oh Maureen, looking through black coloured glasses. Is despair all that we have left.

Well said, Maureen! Wouldn't it be sad if the only thing some people leave behind are the comments they make on Facebook!!!

Hi Maureen

On the other hand, just being remembered by those who loved you is special I reckon.

Terry

It is a bit dark isn't it  I don't know Terry, I agree that being remembered by someone is special - but can't help but think if they ignore you while you're alive it's highly unlikely they will miss you when you're gone. Does it matter? Probably not. I think I am at that stage of my life where it is starting to tick me off that age is making me increasingly invisible - perhaps it is just my perception although other friends have confirmed feeling the same way ... I don't like it.

So true, Maureen!

I get ticked off when news items describe anyone over 60 as "elderly". You know, "the elderly woman was aged 64"!! (unless it's Jane Fonda or Helen Mirren!)

Well, I don't feel elderly at all!

I think you are right Maureen about the invisibility of old people. Doesn't worry me that much usually, I get miffed when I am spoken down to as if I was a child. In the old days the elderly , 'the aldermen ' were revered as the repository of collected experience and wisdom. The 50s and 60s brought in the cult of youth and the older were regarded as redundant only the new and latest mattered. I heard that Ringo Starr has turned 80, I wonder what he thinks of his contribution to the cult of youth

Wow! Neville, I can't believe Ringo is 80!! If Elvis was alive, he'd be 85!!

I agree with you about being spoken down to. When I would take my elderly Mum to appointments, it always infuriated me when the professional person (or sometimes the admin) would look at me and say, "Does she want to do this or that?" Mum had no dementia and was entirely "with it", so I used to reply, "Why don't you ask her?"

I agree with all of the comments. Life experience counts for nothing. No wonder we get cynical - and if my I Pad says once more "an error has occurred and this page has been re loaded" I'll chuck the darn thing out.

Cheers, Jeff
