Hear the Gentle Patter of the Rain
Hear the gentle patter of the rain.
It batters soft against my windowpane.
It trickles past the bluestones in the lane.
Hear the gentle patter of the rain.
See the water falling from the sky.
It splashes on the brollies passing by.
The people underneath are mostly dry.
See the water falling from the sky.
Smell the dampness hanging in the air.
I sit beside the fire in my chair.
I’m safe and warm and haven’t got a care.
Smell the dampness hanging in the air.
Touch the drops that creep beneath the sash,
Finishing their glass-bound downward dash.
The time has passed for movements bold and rash.
Touch the drops that creep beneath the sash.
Hear the gentle patter of the rain.
It jingles like an often-heard refrain.
It brings a peace I cannot quite explain.
Hear the gentle patter of the rain.

Re: Hear the Gentle Patter of the Rain
Yes, Stephen, I agree with Duncan. A well crafted poem. I especially enjoyed the way its repetitive nature mirrors the drumming of the rain.
