Up in the Mountains Today

Up in the mountains the skiers arrive
At the end of a long and a harrowing drive.
Back ends spin out on a road made of ice.
It’s cold and it’s windy and not very nice.
I’m down in the valley, I’m happy to say.
It’s dangerous up in the mountains today.

The road, it is narrow and windy and steep.
Along it the vehicles gingerly creep.
The track to the lodge is not easy to see.
The fog’s like a soup – most especially pea.
Would I head off to be in it? No way!
It’s dangerous up in the mountains today.

On the tyres of your wheels you must always put chains,
Or else you will find that you make little gains.
The ice is so smooth that you won’t get a grip,
Which fast sets the scene for a frightening trip.
You’ll slip and you’ll slide and you’ll slide and you’ll sway.
It’s dangerous up in the mountains today.

You must wear a beanie, on each hand a mitt.
That’s just the start of an intricate kit.
With multiple layers and underclothes long,
You’ll lessen the chances that something goes wrong,
And go for bright colours – avoid beige or grey.
It’s dangerous up in the mountains today.

It’s dangerous up in the mountains, you know,
At this time of year, when it’s bucketing snow,
When the temperature’s low (and the prices are high!)
If you don’t know why now, you will never know why.
I’m down in the valley, and that’s where I’ll stay,
‘Cos it’s dangerous up in the mountains today!

BRR!!! I’m with you Stephen!

We had a bleak day yesterday with a cold wind and very little sun ... seemed like Victoria was exporting its weather! Today is totally the opposite ... a warm breezy short-sleeve day with not a cloud in the sky! So changeable, which is a bit unusual for us up here.

Love the poem! Could be the start of a series ... Up in the Tropics, Out in the Desert, Down on the Beach, Up in the Rainforest, Out on the Plains, Down in the City ... and so on! ;)

Cheers
Shelley

Thanks, Shelley. Nice thought.

I actually did drive into the mountains the next day...
