Hiking Dilemma (in reply to "Hiking Heaven")

Post by Shelley Hansen » Sat Feb 17, 2018 8:59 pm

Carrying on our camping -vs- comfort debate ... in reply to Stephen's "Hiking Heaven" (see his poem on separate thread).

HIKING DILEMMA

(c) Shelley Hansen 17/2/18

I read of "Hiking Heaven" penned by Stephen on this page
and came to the conclusion that it must be quite the rage.
I'm missing an experience I shouldn't live without -
an option to discover just what life is all about.

And so I grabbed a notebook and began to make a list
of items deemed essential that would certainly be missed
if left at home. But soon I found the task was fraught with pain,
for complications grew and grew. Allow me to explain ...

Of course, I'll need a sleeping bag and tent for overnight,
some stuff to shoo the mozzies off, some food to have a bite;
a raincoat if the weather breaks, a stick to scale the hills;
to cope with Arthur Itis and his mates ... a box of pills.

I'll need a stash of water while I'm crashing through the trees -
for Queensland in the summer reaches forty-plus degrees!
Some snake chaps for the taipans that lie hidden in the rocks;
to ward off pesky leeches - a supply of woolly socks.

I'm sure to pick up ticks, so I'll need stuff to knock 'em dead,
and cleaner for my specs so I'll be sure to see ahead.
My sleep machine that keeps me breathing - need that, come what may.
Of course, that means a generator has to join the fray.

My beauty case must come, so I'll look pretty on TV
in case of misadventure and they have to rescue me.
And so, my last conclusion when the facts are done and said
is that I should remain at home ... with four walls and a bed!!

Well done, Shelley - and I think you've made the right decision. You could probably chuck a bit of make-up in a side pocket, but a generator is going to be a challenge. Maybe Elon Musk will come up with something compact and solar-powered that would work for you, but until then...

Although I guess it's unlikely you'll get clobbered by falling speakers while camping in a tent! :o

Cheers
