Rafa, respectfully.
Rafa, respectfully.
Who’s Rafa? He plays tennis? – Oh, heck no! He doesn’t play,
he fights with guts and grit and soul – it’s battle all the way
With forehand near unhittable especially on the clay,
his double lefty backhand with a topspin wins the day!
Chi, aaah! Chi, aaah! Chi, aaah! Chi, aaah!
He pours his passion on the court between the painted lines,
Though in this realm he is a king, his humaness still shines,
Before a point, receive or serve, he executes a dance,
a trophy rests upon the score – he cannot take a chance!
Chi, aaah! Chi, aaah! Chi, aaah! Chi, aaah!
To start, he needs to tweak his shorts – his shirt needs twitching too
Then touch the nose and flick the ear (the left one of the two).
Another flick upon the nose – the left side first and then,
Repeat upon the right side and then brush an ear again.
Chi, aaah! Chi, aaah! Chi, aaah! Chi, aaah!
You laughing yet? Then please desist, remember what you’ve seen –
You saw a man who ranks amongst the best there’s ever been!
With greatness comes great scrutiny. Would you hold up my friend?
The quirkiness of genius – just one means to an end.

I touch my nose, left ear, nose again, and right ear every time I start the new verse of a poem, Owly, but luckily the TV cameras are never on me!

Another one to watch is Smithy the Captain of the Australian Cricket team.
He goes through numerable motions as he faces up.
Great sportsman all of them.
Merv.

Cricket and tennis nearly done for this summer.
How can you tell if a footy player is being quirky or just an idiot?

Good one, Wendy - it captures Rafa's quirks to a T - and wasn't the tennis great?
Stephen - I'm hardly game to start a new poem now, lest I find myself engaging in some weird ritual that I hitherto didn't notice!!!
Cheers
