Re: The Lady Of The Lakes
Hi
I've brought this poem to life again to pass on some sad tidings about the real 'Lady of the Lakes" on whom this poem is based.
Unfortunately she passed away last year through cancer I believe (I have since learned that she died in 2012) - I'm not sure of her age but by then probably in her fifties.
She was a tiny little thing and her detector always seemed to big for her to carry, She had a thing about working the giant salt lakes in the WA Goldfields and was a really good and successful prospector.
It seemed that everyone knew of her but few had actually seen her and so the legend grew - I first met he on the salt lake at Mount Margret - I must write a bit more about her one day.

Hi Terry
That's sad to hear. Your poem is yet another example of how truth (even a smidgen of it) can be so much stranger than fiction, and that the best stories we write have their roots in fact.
Looking forward to hearing more as time goes by.
Cheers

Hi Shelley
I have since learned that she died in 2012 after a 2 year battle with cancer - I first met her in the nineties.
But your right - certainly in my case anyway, pretty well all my poems are factual or at least based to some extent on fact.

Re: The Lady Of The Lakes
There are so many stories told about mysteries around Lakes and Rivers Terry and many have an element of truth at times.
Enjoyed the read mate.

Thanks Merv
It seemed fitting to mention the story behind the story,
and also to mention the passing of a well known character of the the modern day gold - detector rush.

I always thought this was a story waiting to be brought to life.
Although known about by pretty well all serious prospectors. very few actually met her.
She was almost mythical to some and liked to keep out of sight as much as possible.
Perhaps because she often traveled alone, apart from her big German Sheppard dog.
Possibly also because like a lot of us prospectors, we tended to play our cards pretty close to the chest.
So as I mentioned before, the legend grew and many were saddened to hear of her passing, even though they'd never met her.
I will write the complete story, or what I know it one of these days.
