Blue Dog

My hand – with love – your head caressed
while sadness welled within my chest;
too soon, your mem’ries you’ll bequest
to comfort while we mourn.

The images come flooding back
of walks along an old bush track,
of mateship when my days were black;
my heart today is torn.

Your pain is clear for all to see,
your cries no longer welcome me;
I know it’s time to set you free
tho’ still I dare to dream.

But love dictates my choices now
and I will say goodbye somehow;
with dignity, I must allow
your passing from our team.

I’ll touch no more your faithful head
nor hear again your gentle tread;
just silence…… I will hear instead
when I walk through the door.

Today you breathed a final sigh;
I whisper soft my last goodbye.
Your spirit now is flying high,
pain-free forever more.

Resting gentle in Gods care :cry: Thinking of you Irene - a hard thing to have to do but an obligation and kindness owed to a loving and faithful mate.

Stay strong

Hello Irene
Your have me sitting here in tears. :( :(
You have expressed beautifully your feelings and loss. It brought back to me, a day, two years ago now, when we endured the same loss. I remember most that stillness when returning home....and everywhere I looked there was a reminder...his bowl..his bed..his lead[which still hangs behind the door]. And although I've thought many times about another dog, it just hasn't happened.
Thinking of you Irene.

Thank you everyone. It was difficult to come in last night, and not hear his cries of welcome - he was a very vocal dog who cried with excitement when you came home... as though you had been away for weeks!!
But yes, it was time - just a very hard decision to make.

Sue, whenever I go through the loss of an animal, I think "No more - it's too hard when they go", but because we have two dogs, we then end up getting another one for company for the other one while we are at work, and because they are used to having company. When we lost our last old dog several years ago, Blue was fretting for her, and we eventually gave in and got Brandy - and love her to bits.
But certainly, they never replace the one you lose.

My Dad used to get very upset when we lost a dog. Like you say he'd say
"that's it, no more dogs". Next thing there would be a puppy running around.
Nice poem and well written.

Blue dog will tell you when there is another dog that needs a loving home Irene and the time will then be right to go and get it...but you have to sorrow for him first as is right and respectful.

Sue that lead hanging on the door is holding your baby close to you. I bet if you go down to your local pound there will be one there with the eyes of your old mate and you will fall in love, take him/her home and never regret it for a minute
