His Girl

Any place like Lightning Ridge is filled with people who have stories to tell. Some are believable, some not so.
This is one of them. The 'girl in question was 'picked up' at a Caltex Service station.

As he pulled into the road house
he saw her sitting there.
She’d been out in the rain that night
shown by her sodden hair.
With every car she’d stand and look
then sit back with a sigh.
She’d turn and search in each new group
track each car racing by.
“She been here long?” he asked the man
who pumped the petrol in.
“Since yesterday. Got dumped, I guess.
Rough treatment, seems a sin.”
He opened up his door for her
and offered her a ride.
No word was said, just jerked his head.
She settled by his side.
When he came home from work each day
he’d find her waiting there.
He would gently rub her shoulders
run fingers through her hair.
He could see devotion growing
deep in her big brown eyes.
She didn’t whine or make demands.
She couldn’t tell him lies.
He bought a silver chain for her
to show her that he cared.
A medallion too and on it
the address that they now shared.
He fastened it around her neck
and whispered in her ear.
“If you be true, I’ll care you
you’ll never have to fear.”
He cried the day she left him
Their parting made him sad.
She’d been so true. He called her ‘Blue’.
Best dog he ever had.
