Rafferty Rides Again!!

Post by Gary Harding » Sat Dec 24, 2016 2:59 pm

.. After reading this intriguing poem by T. V. Tierney...

Has any ABPA member actually seen Rafferty ride ??

"And on misty moonlit nights up there,
The old inhabitants all declare
On his big black stallion (or was it a mare?)
That Rafferty Rides again"

In fact, who was Rafferty?? Was he more than "A bushranger bold in the days of old"?

More on T. V. Tierney later on.... his rare and excellent book Radiant Land and Other Verses, and his association with the incredible (Melbourne) Bread and Cheese Club.

Rafferty Rides Again?

I don't like to admit this but last night unable to sleep I was somehow drawn to the silent beach which is only a short distance from my bed.

2.00am and the moon reflecting off the calm water. Eerie.

Then... geez ! what was that!?

A big horse and his rider thundering past!

A shout! A pistol shot.

So whatever I have said about Rafferty, please forget it.

I have no desire to antagonise him.. or his ghost.. or whatever it was that, like me, should not have been there.
Was it Rafferty? being the true coward that I was, I did not stick around to make enquiries.

Gary mate can I suggest that you only drink a quarter of a bottle of rum as drinking a half can bring on hallucinations. Lol.

Appreciate the read Gary.

Well you may be right about the Bundy rum, Merv! :)

.. however I did manage to grab a quick phone-pic before fleeing.

Have a look and see what you reckon.... and then you can make up your own mind.

Do you believe in ghosts?

Did Rafferty ride again.. or not??? T.V. (Tom) Tierney suggests it is a true tale.

After that experience, I also think that he RIDES AGAIN!!!

My wife Chris has often shared a great tale as well penned by Bernard Espinasse.

Thank you for that youtube reference and I really enjoyed listening to it.
Marion Lea... Smoothly and faultlessly recited by Chris.... a very good poem and story.

I gather the guitar accompaniment was done by yourself, which blended nicely with the recitation.

Terrific Australian material.....

That powerful poem of Bernard's brings a lump to one's throat in some places. A sure sign of effective poetic use of words and the reciting of them, I reckon. Well done!
