Fuel glorious fuel.

Remember when petrol was relatively cheap.

In the those far off days I had a little VW beetle and it cost me $2 to fill up. Cost is relative, but even so, that was still fairly cheap and going on a long drive it was more of a consideration to get fuelled up at the appropriate time rather than being conerned about the cost of fuel.

The Police Force in those days used big cars like the Ford Galaxy and later the Rambler Classic and the Rambler Rebel, as fast cars. Big cars with big fuel consumption.
In 1972 that all changed when OPEC raised the price of oil drastically.

The Police Force then moved to smaller cars for pursuits, like the Torana GT, the Morris Cooper, but later went back to big cars like the Valiant Charger and the GT Ford.
Now they are back with V8 Commodores. But they got rid of the big Ford F100 trucks with the caged canopies on back. They were huge petrol guzzlers and horrible to drive, you'd swear they had a square wheels when they got up a bit of speed.
Out west we had Toyota "troop-carriers" and Lancruisers.. They were diesel not petrol, but used vast amounts of fuel. I think they might use Holden Rodeos now.

Back in 72 I was tempted to ditch my little VW bug and get a big long Chevrolet V8. You could buy them for a song after the petrol price hiked.
Eventually , the biggest cars I ever had were, a Valiant with push button auto transmission and later a V6 Holden Commodore.

Now I just potter around in a little Hyundai Getz " buzzbox " as my neighbour calls it.
It costs about $50 to fill up, but lasts me for a few weeks on that just for a bit of shopping etc.

Still, if we had to use coca-cola or red wine for fuel, they are more expensive per litre than petrol !! ;)
