Racist taunt.

It seems after all that the latest heartache over racist booing at the AFl is really a tragic mistake. It is not at all racism but a seasonal affliction that , for some unknown reason, grips the less intellectually endowed members of the community. It's called AFLism.

It has manifested itself in some striking ways.

For years it was thought that AFL supporters were crying " Up ya, we're crazy " when eventually it emerged that they were calling " Up there Cazaly " which of course is no less a symptom of some serious malfunction in communication.
And why they should want to chant the obvious truth that " Garden grows" was of deep puzzlement until it was revealed by expert language analysts that perhaps " Garn the crows" was actually the cry.

It would appear that the gathering of people afflicted with AFLism muddies the waters of meaning because of their sad inability to articulate English well. So when they cry encouragement to Goodes, with the rallying cry " Goodes, Goo-oo-oo-des " it has been mistaken by more clear English speakers as " Boo, Boo-oo-oo).

So we can all stop being disturbed about bad blood. It is just a case of AFLism. Hopefully it will dissipate with the onset of warmer weather.

G/day Neville

What can I say without unwittingly putting my foot in it ... I know say nothing.

G'day Terry. :)

Maybe, Matt, if Big Jim Phelan was around he could get an arts grant from George Brandis so that mythology may be perpetually renewed.

"But the dance forever the same-the elderly still
loyally crying Carn...Carn...(if feebly) unto the very
end,
having seen in the six-foot recruit from Eaglehawk their
hope of salvation."

(from Life-Cycle dedicated to Big Jim Phelan, by Bruce Dawe.)
