The perceptive male.

Post by Neville Briggs » Sun Jul 17, 2011 10:51 am

Many years ago, as part of my job, I was called to investigate the case of this man who had beaten up his partner. ( one of many such cases actually )

After speaking with a distraught lady and an aggressive male, the legal duty was clear. With the help of my offsider, we placed the man under arrest to be charged with assault.

Unfortunately this didn't suit the culprit who put on a bit of a fight and required us to manhandle him roughly and bundle him into the wagon.

Sometimes, the complainants change sides when they see their partners being handled by the police, so I tried to keep her on side by remarking " I reckon it's a pretty bad thing for a bloke to beat up a woman. " I pointed to her protruding belly " Especially a pregnant woman. "

She looked at me rather coldly " I'm not pregnant "

I never made that mistake again Marty

Well spotted Heather, I have corrected my syntax. :)

Yes Heather, she did change sides.

At court, the man pleaded not guilty and defended the charge. His lady got up in court as a witness for the defence and lied, denying that he had done certain things.
Unfortunately at that time she did not know that her partner had already been in the witness box and had admitted the things she was denying ...Found guilty as charged.

And so say all of us !!!!!

Amazes me that women will defend a man who beats them ??

No Heather, she was not done for perjury.
I think the courts accept that people will fib to try and get out of things, sort of part of the game.
If a lying witness is revealed as part of some malicious conspiracy calculated to destroy an innocent person that would be a different matter.

G'day Neville,

I feel for you. I once asked the shop assistant in a shoe store when her baby was due and she said, "I'm not pregnant". I felt so bad I bought the shoes which I didn't even like. I apologised and said My daughter had a similar shirt when she was pregnant and that's why I presumed she was pregnant. That wasn't really the truth. She had an enormous tummy.
