Urgent - Racing/jockey poem

Hi Everyone
I had a call today from a lady who wants to read a poem at her uncles funeral on tuesday.
He was an old WA country jockey, and is chasing a poem about wa jockeys (or australian jockeys), or even a verse about galloping or horse racing, or being in the paddock early in the morning.
Can anyone please help asap??
I am sending her a copy of Will Ogilvies 'The Morning Gallop', but welcome any others that might be suitable so she can choose what she feels suits him
If you have some, can you please post the words in your reply also so I can copy and paste them to an email for her?
thanks heaps
Irene

G'day Irene

Banjo Paterson was a great fan of horse racing and wrote a number of poems on the subject. Off the top of my head, some of the titles I can think of are:

Rio Grande's Last Race
Do They Know?
Only a Jockey
Old Pardon, the Son of Reprieve
A Disqualified Jockey's Story

And that is just a small selection (I have added links to those ones, for easy access to words). A book of Paterson poems would certainly be a good place to start.

Regards

John

Paterson's "Father Riley's Horse" perhaps is worth a look in ...

Irene , John and Manfred, not that long back Jim Haynes did a publication on best Australian Racing Stories i think around 2010. relating to stories and poems on horse racing. maybe this poem would suit the modern era.

Racing Very Grand (Duncan Williams)

In the racing field of Thoroughbreds,
Of trainers track and sand,
The stables, J.B.Cummings,
And where racing ,Very Grand.
This kindly dark bay filly,
Has tested trials - now raced,
A defeating win at Canterbury,
And often she has placed.

Newcastle track had raced there,
At Kembla Grange as well.
Ran tops for Sydney jockeys,
N.Rawiller and M.Bell.
And another start at Rosehill,
With Bowman's style at hand,
She's trained by J.B.Cummings,
And where racing, Very Grand.

The stables based at Randwick,
Where the horseman take their part,
Strapping riders, swimming, walking,
At three thirty am start.
The horses are there waiting,
So keep those reins in hand,
Their trained by J.B.Cummings,
And where racing, Very Grand.

For J.B.Cummings - is now eighty,
A cup winner from years back,
Has trained his share of horses,
And a master of the track.
Very Grand, is ready waiting,
For the jockeys whip in hand,
Well trained by J.B.Cummings,
Yes where racing, Very Grand.
