Re: Glenny's question "why this oppositional attitude arises when the structure of verse is discussed?"

Analogous Allergic Reaction

A friend of mine (hmmm...call him Mick)
has allergies that make him sick
and, thought it might seem quite absurd,
what sets him off can be a word!
Like "anapaest'; "iamb"; "trochee";
"tetrameter"; or worse: "spondee".
"Caesura" makes his eyeballs glaze;
"inversion" makes his temper blaze!
Such literary terms as these
will make him tremble at the knees,
and scoff and cough and spit and splutter;
rant and rave and curse and mutter.
And all this seems real strange to me...

you see, this friend...writes poetry!

Very good indeed Baz. 'Real' good Iambic. (te he).............just........

one little glitch....

rant and rave and curse and mutt-er.
And all this seems real strange to me...
(lose the 'and' & replace 'real' with 'quite'.)

'rant and mutter, rave and curse' could set it up for rhyming with 'verse'....??

People have given up giving me greeting cards because I tut tut about the state of the verses in them. That's fair I reckon, as some half-poet has been paid to produce them...tut tut.

Good one Will :lol: very close to the nerve. :o

I think a line of trochee sounds OK,....... why not Glenny ?
To emphasise the ranting and raving, ....works for me .
Is there a cosmic poetry rule that says every line must be the same metre.

Because the second last line is a new sentence, well .......my ear accepts the switch back to iambic.
I like the real because it makes an assonance with rant and rave.

Not meaning to be oppositional :twisted: Glenny. Just a another view of things. :roll:

I'll be corrected if need be.

Hey Baz - I reckon my eyes became glazed just reading that :lol:

Oh Glenny why are people so unkind :cry:

I like the little rhymes you see in birthday cards though do agree
that sometimes what is writ aint swell – but it conveys the message well
I wrote to Hallmark once and asked had they a job for me perchance
for I could write them poetry with an Australian flavour ...see
I’d write about Emus and Roos and Kookaburras , Dingoes too.
I’d write a poem, say G’day, pen nice thoughts for a Blokes birthday
I was as blue as blue could be – they said it weren’t their cup of tea. :lol:

Glenny, like Robert Frost, I take the road less travelled.

Ah Zondrae, Marty, I'll lend you my book of Robert Frost, a wonderful poet.
It was a great phrase of Frost's that Graeme Connors thought of.. there's life outside of country music...thank goodness. :mrgreen:
