School Magazine turns 100!

The School Magazine, first published in 1916, is celebrating its centenary this year.

I believe this makes it the longest running magazine for children in the world. It has been described as "The New Yorker" for children.

The magazine is published monthly from February - November, with different editions for four different age brackets of primary school children - 40 magazines per year. It contains stories, articles, plays, book reviews, cartoons, jokes, puzzles…and poems! Each magazine contains 2 - 3 poems, which means approximately 100 poems are published each year. Both rhyming and non-rhyming poems are published, with no bias in favour of one or the other.

The School Magazine has done a wonderful job promoting poetry for children in Australia. Indeed, it is now the only print magazine in Australia that does publish poetry for children. All contributors are paid - on acceptance rather than publication - and all poems are illustrated in full colour.

Three cheers for The School Magazine!

What a great achievement! And how good that the magazine is still publishing poetry for children.

Thanks for sharing this good news story, Stephen!

Cheers
