ANZAC EYES

My favourite CJ Dennis lines. I should imagine that after men returned from Gallipoli and the First World War they would certainly have had a different appearance:

An' when I ask Mar Flood she sighs--
An' sez 'e's got the Anzac eyes.

She sez 'e's got them soldier's eyes
That makes 'er own eyes wet.

It's sad that we still have men and women coming back to this country and to countries of many nations with Anzac eyes ...around the world mothers weep

Couldn't agree more Maureen, but it seems it is the way of the world and was ever thus. However, I think CJ Dennis captured the whole disaster with the simple lines,
"An' when I ask Mar Flood she sighs--
An' sez 'e's got the Anzac eyes."
We now know what unspeakable things those eyes must have seen.

Those few lines say so much Vic.

After Black Saturday I saw that same look in the eyes of people who had been through unspeakable terror during the fire. At the time I didn't realise what it was but I now know it was shock and I can see it in the eyes of people in photographs. It's something I will never forget.
