Breakfast time to those who can remember

Breakfast time ©

Seven thirty in the morning,
Its breakfast time in our house.
Or if you prefer feeding time at the zoo

Mum! Suzy’s pinched the toy in the cereal packet
It’s not fair mum she got it last time
I’ll get even with you just you wait.
What did you hit me for mum?
I wasn’t gunna do it honest

The chinking of a spoon
Against a plate as they ate
The slurping of milk
As they drank it down
The mad chatter as they squabbled
Amongst them selves
The noise unbelievable
As they prepared for school

I’d sat there listening to their incessant banter
Now eighty, I sat here in my flat,
Silently alone, having breakfast

Thinking strange how you see
And hear all this in your memory
It was just as you remembered it
Only then you thought,
About that old saying
That silence was golden.
My memory say’s no
Silence is not.

Memory is a funny thing isn't it Bill? - I don't know if it comes with age I suspect it does, that our memories of many years ago are clearer to us than what happened last week. I think they call it selective memory a bit like the selective hearing that we also seem to acquire

Like the poignancy in this piece of writing. You have captured the feeling of the feeding frenzy of the ferals (kids) well in it.

Cheers

Maureen

I may not always succeed in making a difference, but I will go to my grave knowing I at least tried.
