Our natural wonder, curiosity and imagination goes when we learn the importance of " the rules "

That's not a NO, otherwise I wouldn't bother debating poetry or playing with rhyme that sucks. ;)

note that I didn't say when we learn the rules, I said when we learn " the importance of ".

A slight variation on the Slam Poetry intro.

THE RULES are not the point ! The point is THE POETRY .

Oh dear Manfred, you poor man, it's worse than I thought. Never mind, help is at hand; the local video shop should be able to lend you a copy of the movie The Dead Poets' Society, watch it all carefully in one dose. Then a daily dose of Robert Frost, Kenneth Slessor and Les Murray should see you fixed up in no time.

I wonder how many of the keen bush poetry children will maintain their interest and take our places when us old geezers bundy off. There doesn't seem to be many coming forward, in our area anyway. I won't be around to find out.

I think you need to get out a bit more Nev, broaden the vision. Maybe come with me to some schools and see what is being written and performed by these kids ...

Natural wonder, curiosity and imagination is still upheld by kids in spite of the 'constraints' of rhyme and metre. I think all the wonder is lost on some adults with self inflicted myopia.

As for poets to look up to, my preferences are, in no particular order, Lawson, Fredriksen, Stevens, Gordon, Pitt et. al. ...
Australian writers (rhyme n metre) all the way and reality rather than soppy fiction ... Home grown really is best.

I am sure the effort you put in with the children is great. I wish you every success.
