Poetry Book

Post by Neville Briggs » Sat Feb 12, 2011 1:49 pm

I found a book in the bookshop that has been published just this year. It's called 100 Australian Poems of Love and Loss edited by Jamie Grant. It is beautifully printed and bound with fine pencil drawings as illustrations so I couldn't resist buying it.

Of course it is very poignant and emotive and mainly non bush poetry type stuff, and the "loss" section is prefaced as being about bereavement , loss and death. Sounds very heavy , so I was surprised and amused to find a poem by Banjo Paterson in this section..
The Geebung Polo Club. I suppose that's about tragic loss

Also I was intrigued to find a poem called In Memoriam, written by Emily Mary Barton ( 1817-1909 ) she was the grandmother of Banjo Paterson. Interesting.
