South East Asia - Distribution.

This is an excerpt from a Bookpal promotion that I thought might interest some -

How Your Book Can Be Distributed in Southeast Asia.

As Australian authors, we often think of our local market, the North American market, and the UK market as the prime markets for our books.
Undoubtedly, these markets are the largest segments for English books.
However, they are also the most competitive. With the rapid changes in book consumption patterns and a recession in much of the Western world, it simply means it is tougher for the Australian author to penetrate those markets. Now, a new shift is happening in Southeast Asia.

In most of these countries, English is either a second or third language, and is commonly used as a business language.
Our SE Asian book distribution channel covers major bookstores in Singapore, Malaysia, Phillipines (Manilla), Thailand (Bangkok), Indonesia (Jakarta), and Hong Kong. The total population of these countries comes close to half a billion people.Generally non-fiction and education books do better in these countries. Books on “How to Make Money,” business and health books are the strong sellers in the non-fiction category.
So how does our book distribution work in these countries? It works as a standard book distribution agreement.
Here is a breakdown.
1. Our book distributor will print several copies of your book. These sample copies are given to buyers in major bookstore chains in the region.
2. If buyers express an interest in your book, they will place an order for your book. For example, to start off, they may require 150 books to be stocked in their bookstores. This order will be sent to you for approval. You will be required to pay for the printing of these 150 books.
3. Once every 3-4 months, our distributor will report on the sale of these books. If the books do not sell they will put them in other bookstores. If they remain unsold, they will be returned to you. In most cases book buyers are very experienced and the return amount should not exceed 20% of the books. In the event your first order is sold out, more orders may be placed by book buyers. The buyers will seek your approval before proceeding with the second and subsequent print runs of your book.
4. The distributor and bookstore will take 67% of the RRP of your book. So you will need to cover the cost of book printing and profits with your remaining 33%. This is an industry-standard distribution cost.
5. You will be informed about your profits at the end of each reporting season and you will be paid upon the subsequent quarterly pay-date by Bookpal.
So there you have it, warts and all, of our Southeast Asian distribution service, which now comes standard with our Diamond and Bestseller packs, and is available with our marketing packs.
