I reckon jokers who get all defensive & 'superior' like are .....simply feeling threatend. (And with good cause regarding our skills...& their lack of same.)
A posh sheila at one of those unbearably supercilious 'presentations' once said to me....'How quaint. It rhymes.' I replied 'How sad. Yours mimes.' Snotty nosed cow.

I think that lady was not a snotty nosed cow, more a person with what is called the categorical eye.
She did not know ( or choose ) to change her point of view when looking at works of art. We can't look at art or poetry all from the same position. To discern and appreciate all the varieties and forms of art and poetry we need to change our standpoint in relation to each one.
Your friend was not doing that.

By the same token, are we doing what she did when we disdain contemporary poetry.
She might say " quaint " and be supercilious, do we say " the drivel of pretentious litterati " and be also supercilious, or worse; philistine.

Prejudice, is a two edged sword Glenny, cuts both ways.

I think there is a world of enjoyment of poetry out there, if we can only learn how to change our point of view to see each as they are meant to be seen, or heard.
