FIRE FIGHT FOR AUSTRALIA 2020. Maureen Clifford © The #ScribblyBarkPoet

We watched in awe as on TV they gathered to the throng
seventy thousand give or take. That many can't be wrong
with people packed in wall to wall -
on stage volunteers standing tall
an audience held in the thrall ...
helping to save our country.

Welcome to country one and all, they came from round the world
and such emotions they unleashed as didge and bagpipes skirled.
The drone of didge as 'brolga' danced
had the whole audience entranced
as round the stage a young bloke pranced
painted - to honour country.

Old Mother Nature, she was kind tonight - no heat or rain
as if she knew we needed this to help relieve the pain
She gave us all those old time stars,
we raised the roof and raised the bar
the music was heard near and far
across our grieving country.

We are the champions of the world - united as we speak
and side by side we'll rise again from circumstances bleak.
Our people may be battered, burnt
but cowed and beaten? No we weren't.
And hopefully a lesson learnt
to love better our country.

The dollars raised will be a balm which help to ease the pain.
rebuild new habitats for all, alleviate the strain.
Our wildlife who were decimated,
pastures burnt then saturated.
People homeless and frustrated
suffering in our country.

Our firefighters in yellow garb the heroes of our nation,
the public digging deep for cash a total inspiration.
The world who has embraced us all,
the mates who wouldn't let mates fall
that Aussie spirit standing tall.
We love our harsh brown country
Core of our heart - our country.

Well, you've certainly paved the road for us again, Maureen. Straight out of the blocks and onto the page!

A thought-provoking set of prompts ...

No sense mucking about  I was disappointed I couldn't work Alice Cooper in - I had it in my head that the Cooper River and Alice Springs were close to each other but luckily thought to check a map and found out they weren't so my witty little thought flew away.

Well done Maureen - you've captured it all and I especially love that last line. What I saw of this on FB and TV was incredible - combining the didge with 'You're the Voice' was inspired... Goose bumps on goose bumps!

Good one Maureen
You have given a comprehensive coverage in your poem - so thanks for paining the pictures and filling in the gaps,
for those like me who missed it.

I'm ashamed to say we missed the concert as we don't take a TV when we go on holiday.
It's just great to have a break from all the mainly rubbish that's on it.
But of course that means you miss the good stuff like the concert as well.

Cheers

Terry
