Homework #1 WE 11/3/19 - Sonnet to Love's Rainbow

Post by Shelley Hansen » Sat Feb 23, 2019 3:06 pm

This is an original idea Maureen - and I hope I can come up with more than one response to these prompts which really spark my interest. For my first one, here is a sonnet which I confess I began quite some time ago, but which I've tweaked to fit in with the theme we're discussing.

By the way, sorry about last week's lack of enterprise - I did try, but couldn't come up with anything in the haiku or tanka line that I was remotely happy with. But I'll keep at it!

This is a Shakespearean sonnet - hopefully my next one will be a Petrarchan! We'll see ...

Sonnet to Love's Rainbow
(c) Shelley Hansen 23/2/19

With heaven's healing tears the earth was wet
at sunset as I chanced to glance above.
The brilliance of the rainbow, freshly set,
recalled to me the coloured path of love.
Red quickens in the pulse, the vibrant glow
of orange firelight warms the spirit through.
Bright sunny yellow cheers sad indigo,
sweet memories cascade in cooling blue.
The faithful heart ignores the march of time,
in age, as first in youth, its eyes are keen.
Through hills and vales of violet we climb
as love sows blossoms in the fields of green.
When two hearts walk as one, as years unfold,
at last they find love's rainbow leads to gold.

Oh that is lovely Shelley - the use of the rainbow colours a brilliant idea and doesn't it work well. Nicely crafted .

Thank you Maureen. I actually wrote the original version of this for our friends’ wedding anniversary a few years back. Just tweaked it a bit for our exercise.

amazing sometimes how tweaking something gives it a whole new spin. Nicely done and I bet your friends were delighted with their special gift.
