Homework WE 30/7/18 - The Death of Common Sense

Post by Shelley Hansen » Sun Jul 22, 2018 3:11 pm

Hard acts to follow in this cycle!! I thought I'd take a "curved ball" approach ...

The Death of Common Sense
(c) Shelley Hansen 21/7/18

The crimson sun of Common Sense was sinking in the west.
A creepy sort of feeling had arisen in my breast
to think we might be losing this essential quality,
and all our kids would never know the way things used to be.

I don't remember when it was we buried Common Sense,
when Courtesy walked out the door, replaced by Self Defence.
"It's not my fault - it's yours," resounds the soundtrack of our age,
when anger is an anthem and resentment turns to rage.

Come! Join the wake for Common Sense and drink his health all day
until the rising of the moon turns campfire ashes grey.
Yes, drink until the drink gives out - and do not look ahead
or wonder why the curlew ceased his wailing for the dead.

A different slant on those phrases Shelley. Good thinking. :)

Thanks Neville. The prompts had a whimsical sort of feel, I thought - so I followed that lead.

Hi Shelley

That's one thing about homework, you can set your mind free to wander wherever it chooses.

You just need a bit imagination and common sense I reckon.

Thanks Terry ... yes, the writing workshop is a great opportunity to let the thoughts flow ... with a bit of common sense ( which we hope is not completely dead!)

Well done Shelley - I am a bit of a fan of the curved ball concept, along with thinking outside the square. By the way I agree with your comment about hard acts to follow. The standard of the writings here really seem to have reached a new high over the past few set of prompts IMO
