H'work for w/e 2.10.17 - CAPTURED

CAPTURED ...Maureen Clifford The #ScribblyBark Poet

Atop a hillside as dawn broke - canvas in place and colours mixed
she waited for the morning light to show the beauty of the scene,
to burn away the wisps of mist, to splash dark shadows on the green,
to bring to life the scenery - that in her mind memory had fixed.

Near twenty years had come and gone, since last she wandered to this place,
and dressed in darkness she had thought that perhaps it had been a dream
but as she followed winding roads, each rock and tree was as she'd seen,
undeniable familiar beauty held in every trace.

How long pray is forever? Does forever last for a lifetime?
She sketched the dusky blue of hills, the gold of paddocks burnt and dry,
white weatherboards and green tin roof, the azure blue of morning sky.
Engrossed in capturing the scene, the soft new growth of the springtime.

And in her mind, though not yet here, she saw the scattered ewes and lambs
that gamboled on the granite slopes, or somnolent slept in sunshine
groups clustered like white cotton bolls, all watched over by ewes benign
who grumbled bellicose and deep. Contented, plump Merino dams.

Her canvas was a work in progress capturing one final time
the view below, the place she loved - this one last visit, far from town.
When finished it would grace her wall - no acres now to call her own.
She painted on, recalled times gone. Memories she captured now in rhyme.

Maybe poetry and art are possible answers to "How long is forever?" in the sense that they can both outlive a lifetime...all the more reason to keep writing. This set of prompts has been a very interesting one, Maureen.

Cheers
David
