Homework w/e 21.8.17 - EKKA 2017

EKKA 2017 ... Maureen Clifford © The #ScribblyBark Poet

"Roll up! Roll up! - Hey country boy- you look like you'd be game
to go a round or two up here - your five seconds of fame
if you can last the distance. There's a winning purse at stake.
Enough to buy a beer or two - a Queensland thirst to slake."

"Roll up! Roll up my fine young man and enter here - within
are sights that you have never seen, I really can't begin
to explain what's on offer - nought illegal or shady.
Just pay your coin and enter - inside's a bearded lady.

The sideshow alley spruikers in fine fettle and fine voice
were touting their attractions and punters were spoilt for choice,
with carousels and dodgem cars , hot dogs and sausage rolls
and coloured candy floss galore, hamburgers and rissoles.

Large ice cream cones with strawberries glowing like ruby jewels.
A shell game which soon separated good money from fools.
The ferris wheel was jampacked and it gave just the best view
of the central arena plus a sheepdog trial or two.

Four hundred thousand people are expected through the gates
One hundred forty shows they've run - and each year Queensland waits
in great anticipation - for this jewel in our crown.
The best of Queensland gathers as the country comes to town.

Ah Maureen, that brings back memories of childhood and the magic of funfairs. The one thing I always associate with them is those moving clown heads into which you dropped a table-tennis ball in a vain attempt to win a prize. Never did, as far as I can remember!

Cheers
David

Me either - though I have tried at many country shows as well as the Ekka, and even at Luna Park in Sydney. Always went home empty handed
