Homework 5.3.12 'The Day I Almost Yelled at Dad'

‘The Day I Almost Yelled at Dad’

A long time ago, when I was just newly wed
I was a little bored with my hair being red.
Now, one day, as it happened, much to my surprise,
a competition I entered and won the prize.

A new coiffure could be mine. I tell you its true.
So, I made an appointment to get a new ‘do’.
I thought I would maybe like to try going blonde,
A feat I deemed possible by a magic wand.

I willingly went off when the day came at last
knowing a new persona was approaching fast.
The hairdresser worked hard as I sat in the chair;
she mixed a potion, stripped and bleached my rich red hair.

When she finally uncovered my brand new look,
I was shocked; it looked nothing like it did in the book.
My hair was no longer red; it was almost white
and to my discomfort looked an outrageous fright.

Initially, I didn’t know what I should do.
I understood for sure I would be in the poo.
I felt convinced my new husband would not endorse,
which only filled me with more distressing remorse.

But, to my utter surprise he welcomed the change;
he didn’t think that I looked like I had the mange.
He told me he thought I looked a bit of a sort
and I sighed with relief; at least we hadn’t fought.

But, I knew without doubt, I had to face my dad.
I was afraid his response would be really bad.
I was completely right and my mood did worsen
as he yelled, ‘How dare you interfere with your person!’

I thought, I’m no longer under his dire control.
I was a married woman he couldn’t cajole.
So, I opened my mouth; I would give him a serve
but then I thought my temper he didn’t deserve.

You know how it is when dad commands your respect?
To articulate the words you just can’t connect.
Well, wimpy me didn’t have the audacity
but sometimes wish I possessed the capacity.

Thanks Heather, good to be back.

Ha ha Nev., sort of changes monthly - starts off being red, then goes a bit grey, then back to red. Maybe I should just age gracefully and let it remain grey. Yikes, I don't think so.

Well i think an up to date avatar is required.

Would never have been game to back chat my dad Jakki.

I have six sisters and they were the bane of my life, manys the time i vaulted the back fence with dad giving chase.

Hi Bob

I wasn't agile enough to scale the back fence, but I used to hide the strap whenever I knew I was in for it.

I reckon that's just how dads were when us mob were kids, and we all knew where we stood and had respect for them - hence less likely to get into serious trouble. Felt the strap across my backside many a time and usually I asked for it. And Dad always said before delivering the punishment 'This is hurting me more than it's hurting you.'

Good write Jakki

Cheers

I may not always succeed in making a difference, but I will go to my grave knowing I at least tried.
